How to Dispose of a Refrigerator in Florida (Legally and for Free)

Refrigerators contain federally regulated refrigerant. Here's the legal way to dispose of one in Tallahassee โ€” and how to do it without paying anything.

Refrigerators are weirdly hard to throw away. They're heavy, they're awkward, and โ€” most importantly โ€” they contain refrigerant gas that's federally regulated under the Clean Air Act. Leaving an old fridge on the curb in Tallahassee or hauling it to the dump on your own can run you into both city ordinances and federal EPA rules. Here's the actual path.

The federal rule (and why it matters)

40 CFR Part 82 โ€” the EPA's refrigerant management program โ€” requires that any appliance containing refrigerant (refrigerators, freezers, AC units, water coolers) have the refrigerant recovered by a certified technician before disposal. The gas can't be vented to atmosphere. Doing so is a federal violation with civil penalties up to $40,000 per day per violation, though obviously nobody's getting hit with that for a single home fridge. The practical consequence is that legitimate disposal facilities and curbside pickup services will reject a fridge that hasn't been properly handled.

Why it matters: older fridges (R-12, R-22) contain ozone-depleting compounds, and even newer R-134a is a potent greenhouse gas. The rule isn't bureaucratic โ€” it's environmental.

Option 1: Free pickup (us)

This is the easiest path. We pick up refrigerators in Tallahassee for free, EPA-compliant refrigerant recovery included. If the fridge works, it goes on the resale floor at our warehouse โ€” your old GE Profile becomes a working fridge for the next FSU student. If it doesn't work, we pull the compressor and parts, recover the freon, and recycle the steel.

How to book: call (850) 270-3164. We'll usually have someone out within 24โ€“48 hours.

Option 2: Retailer haul-away

If you're buying a new fridge, most retailers in Tallahassee (Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, ABT Appliances, Frye's) offer haul-away of your old unit. The fee is usually $25โ€“$50, sometimes free with delivery. The retailer's installer handles the disconnect and EPA-compliant disposal.

The catch: you have to be buying a replacement, and they usually only take a 1-for-1 swap (one old, one new). Not useful if you're just trying to get rid of an old fridge with no replacement coming.

Option 3: City of Tallahassee bulk pickup

City residents on regular sanitation routes can schedule a bulk pickup that includes appliances. Important details for fridges specifically:

  • Refrigerant must be certified-recovered before pickup (the city won't take a sealed unit)
  • You typically need to remove the doors for safety (child-entrapment rule)
  • Schedule is usually 1โ€“2 weeks out

You can hire an HVAC contractor to come do the freon recovery and tag the unit, then schedule city pickup โ€” that runs about $75โ€“$125 in service fees for the recovery alone. By the time you're done, paying us nothing or paying a retailer $25โ€“$50 are both better paths.

Option 4: Leon County solid waste facility

Leon County's Solid Waste Management Facility on Apalachee Parkway accepts appliances at the scale house. Pricing is per-ton ($51/ton minimum as of 2026). They handle the EPA compliance on-site, so you don't need pre-recovery. The catch: you have to load the fridge in your truck and drive it out there. Doable, but a Saturday morning.

What you should NOT do

  • Don't cut the refrigerant lines yourself. Federal violation, environmentally bad, and the fridge becomes ineligible for any pickup service
  • Don't dump it on a roadside or vacant lot. Aside from being illegal dumping, fridges are an entrapment hazard for kids and animals
  • Don't leave it on the curb without scheduling pickup. Tallahassee code enforcement will tag it; you'll get a violation notice
  • Don't try to leave it for the next tenant. Working ones occasionally โ€” sure. Broken ones become the landlord's headache and your security deposit deduction

What about freezers, mini fridges, wine coolers, window AC units?

Same rules apply to all of them โ€” anything with a sealed refrigerant circuit needs the same handling. We pick up all of these along with full-size fridges, no separate service call. If you're cleaning out a kitchen with a fridge plus a chest freezer plus a window AC, schedule them all on one visit. Refrigerator pickup details here.

Bottom line for Tallahassee fridges

For most people in Tallahassee, the right path is one of two things: (1) call us for free pickup, or (2) coordinate haul-away when you buy your new fridge. Doing it yourself is doable but usually not worth the time and freon-recovery service cost.

Need pickup or have a question?

We answer 7 days a week. Most pickups scheduled within 24โ€“48 hours.
